The history of NICE can be traced back to more than 70 years ago when one of the pioneer companies under the Group started the gold jewellery business in the 1940s. The business grew as Malaysia economy prospered in the 1970s, and in the 1980s where the Group expanded into manufacturing of gold jewellery and ornaments for the export market. The local retail business took a backseat as export-oriented manufacturing became its main focus.
The Group then subsequently set up its first overseas business in Hong Kong in 1996 and set up its first overseas retail outlet in China in 2002 under the brand name Yikoni Gold. In 2007, NICE entered into a joint venture with Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Company Limited, one of the largest jewellery companies in the world, to jointly venture into the business of wholesale and retail of gold and jewellery in Malaysia.
Then in 2015, against the challenging environment of falling gold prices globally and eroding margins, the Group decided to move up the value chain and begin to focus on the wholesaling and trading of precious stones and precious metals.
Subsequently in February 2020, the Group expanded into construction and properties business and to-date the Group had secured 3 construction contracts with order book of more than RM30 million and all are completed in 2021 and 2022 respectively.
April 2021 marks a major milestone when NICE commence its mining and mineral business when the Group entered into a joint venture to undertake the mining of gold mineral on a 50 hectares land in the Sokor North Area project in Kelantan. The mining area was subsequently expanded to cover an area of approximately 547 hectares in August 2021.
Considering the increasing global demand for minerals, this maiden venture provides a solid platform for NICE to explore more opportunities in the mining and mineral segment as our main priority and it is the intention of the Group to accelerate exploration activity to increase gold resources and reserves and potentially other minerals at the Sokor North Area and the Group endeavours to be one of the leading gold and minerals company in the region.
